The innovative product design allows for a one-step process for sterilization and media transfer while eliminating dead spots, reducing the number of connections, and eliminating the need for a laminar flow hood. The terminations on the fittings are set to industry standards for bio-reactors and popular sizes of flexible tubing — speeding the adaptation to existing systems and processes. Typical applications include media manufacturing, cell harvesting, bio-reactor feeding, pilot plant facilities, pharmaceutical production, and any application using flexible bio-bags. The connection features two flow paths: one to a steam process line and the other to the bio sample/destination. During the sterilization process (1), steam flows through the inlet and out the branch to the steam process line. Once the system has been sterilized (maximum 60 minutes) the tear-away sleeve is removed and the connection is actuated to change the flow path for the biological media. The tear-away sleeve protects the fitting from actuation prior to complete sterilization. Once the connection has been actuated it cannot be reversed. During the actuation process (2), a membrane that protects the biological sample from contamination is punctured and allows the flow to be switched from steam to the biological sample. Once the process is complete the connection can be safely disposed. The polysulfone body and silicone membrane materials meet requirements of USP Class VI, and physicochemical tests.
