Crucial in the maintenance of the thyroid differentiation phenotype. May play a role in lung development and surfactant homeostasis. Defects in NKX2-1 are the cause of benign hereditary chorea (BHC), choreoathetosis, hypothyroidism, and neonatal respiratory distress (CHNRD).
